Fauvism

Matisse_-_Green_LineFauvism is french for ‘wild beasts’.Their work emphasized qualities of strong colour over the representational or realistic values retained by expressionism. Leaders of the movement were Henri Matisse and Andre Derain. The paintings of the fauves were characterised by seemingly wild brush strokes and strident colours while their subject matter had a high degree of simplication and abstraction. Fauvism can also be seen as a mode of expressionism.
