In recent years Penguin Books (also under Puffin) have been publishing books with a more contemporary illustrations and photography. Modern classics published by Penguin Books often feature photography behind the authors names and title in a clean modern sans serif typeface. This gives the book a sleek and modern feel compared to older publishings which featured block colours and capital bold typefaces.
The ‘James and the Giant Peach’ book jacket is a really nice example of how simple a design can be to be engaging and interesting to the audience, with typefaces that work with with the design for example the word ‘giant’ is enlarged from the rest of the type. Penguin books are never over complicated illustrations or bright photography which I need to keep in mind with my design.
Here is a layout of a modern classic Penguin book:
I could choose to do my book jacket in this layout however the book I am designing for is not a modern classic so I don’t think it is a suitable solution to the brief, however I can always experiment with this to see how it looks before deciding.
